Support and training

Before a child is matched and comes to live with you, the local authority who is placing the child will carry out an assessment to identify any specific support that you may need in order to meet the needs of the child. This could include:

  • Support and advice for you
  • Training
  • Financial support
  • Therapy and counselling for the child

The agency that places a child for adoption are responsible for the assessment and provision of any support services for the first three years after a child has been adopted. After this time, the local authority where the adoptive parents live will take over control and be responsible for assessing and providing their support needs.
