Ofsted rate Trust Adoption ‘Outstanding’
The adoption services, provided by Doncaster Children’s Services Trust, have been deemed as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in its latest inspection.
The Trust’s adoption service, which finds adoptive families for children, has been praised by inspector from the social care watchdog for the inspirational leadership and management that has ‘generated a culture in which children’s wellbeing is at the forefront of all of the agency’s work’.
In a report published this week, the service which was previously rated as ‘Good’ in 2015 has been awarded the highest grade ‘Outstanding’.
The service has been commended for putting the child’s wellbeing at the forefront of all its work and matching children with adoptive families ‘who can meet their needs’ said the inspector.
The inspector praised the range of detailed work carried out by the adoption team with each child to identify their needs and ensure that the adopters are well prepared to meet these needs when the child joins their family. The report says: “Additional training in childhood trauma and attachment is provided, which helps adopters to care for children in a way that promotes their emotional safety and wellbeing”. One adopter told the inspector that she was grateful for ‘the skill and care used by staff to match us so successfully with our wonderful, happy little boy’.
The service was also praised for its support to birth parents through its letterbox scheme which helps children and birth families to retain indirect contact through the exchange of letters. Inspector commented that the Trust ‘places an impressive priority on this work and achieves outstanding levels of engagement’ from birth parents, adding that it provides additional ‘emotional support’ for the birth parents.
In the report, the adoption team was commended for their ‘commitment to life story work’ helping to ensure children have vital information about themselves and their birth parents to support them as they grow up.
Praise was also given for the service’s focus on ‘continual development and innovation which leads to ongoing improvement in the service and outcomes provided to children’.
Commenting on the report, Chief Executive of Doncaster Children’s Services Trust Paul Moffat said: “We are exceptionally proud of our Adoption team. They are incredibly focused on supporting everyone involved in the adoption process – the child, the birth parent, and adoptive parents – and ensuring that the child has the support, love and care they need to grow up and thrive.
“I am pleased that the inspector has recognised that they are a hugely ambitious team who are focused on continual development and innovation to further improve outcomes for children.”
Cllr Nuala Fennelly, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Schools, said: “We are thrilled that Ofsted has recognised the high quality of Doncaster’s adoption services and the continued progress the council and Doncaster Children’s Services Trust are making to ensure that every young person in Doncaster is able to lead their life in the best way for them.”
